The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands at moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at moments of challenge and controversy. January 8, 2013
Be an all weather friend, not just fair weather. Say your friend has a rich dad. She has everything. Then one day her dad decides to get a divorce and he takes his money with him. A month later she can't come shopping with you because she doesn't have enough spending money. Do you still stick with her? If you do, your measure is high; if you don't your measure is low. Always pray to God, not just during the good times. If you stay with him through thick and thin, he will not forsake you when times are bad. If a man stays with his family, friends, everyone through everything, the measure of that man will be great.

Communication is so important in my life, and hopefully yours too! I am the treasurer of my school's photography club. The other officers and myself are in the middle of starting our first fundraiser of the year and confusion in communicating almost drove it right in to the ground! We all stepped back and acknowledged the fact that we weren't communicating well and have a meeting set up for tomorrow to set everything straight. Fingers crossed that we pull of the fundraiser without a hitch! 1) A lot of people think that communicating is talking, but an even more important element to communicating is LISTENING! I know it probably sounds really cheesy, but it's true! Everyone has to be willing to listen to others' ideas with an open mind. Leave all your judgments at the door and you will get so much more out of the discussion. 2) If you say you will do something, do it. People have to be able to rely on you. Make sure you don't bite off more than you can chew, but if you do, you need to ask someone to help you finish the job. 3) Don't fall off the grid without warning. Today, we aren't always available to sit down and talk. While that is the highest priority, it just isn't always an option. This means that we resort to video chats, email chains, text messaging, or long phone calls. If your group is depending on reaching you through media, you need to be available when you say you will be. 4) I have a REALLY short temper most days. You might also. Tempers and good communication just don't mix. I know it's a huge challenge, but really make an effort to keep your eyes in your head and non-productive words in your mouth. Remember that your group is all working towards a mutual goal. I don't know what your destiny will be but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve. December 13, 2012
Money doesn't buy happiness. You are happy when you're doing something you like, but joyous when you help and serve others. If someone is destined to be a millionaire and they spend that money on themselves, they won't be truly happy. However if they donate to charities or supply necessities to shelters, they will only then by truly happy. If somebody lives by this quote, they will not only improve their life and boost their happiness, but also work towards helping others and possibly change the world. Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it. October 29 [2012]
Helen is pointing out that, yes, in the world there is so much suffering! Yet in the face of all that, there are all the little glimmers of hope that people are kindling inside their hearts. They know we can overcome this suffering. For example, world hunger. It affects so many people. However all across the country on world hunger day, students gave money to feed people for a little bit of time. All those offerings amounted to a lot. Imagine how long that's going to feed how many people! I can help overcome suffering by volunteering at a soup kitchen, or by smiling at a homeless person. Everyone's small acts of kindness add up to so much more. If your head tells you one thing and your heart tells you another, before you do anything, you should first decide whether you have a better head or a better heart. October 17 [2012]
If you judge with your heart, you will judge emotionally. If you judge with your head, you will judge practically. Say you are a missionary. Your heart will say "I should do this! Spread God's word, help the people, etc." However, your head would tell you "You know, this is great and all, but I could get arrested..." If someone wrongs you, your heart would (should) say "this person deserves a second chance," but your head would say "if I give them the chance to, they will wrong me again." |
