I went home for the first time after a month of college. 1. Cars are fast.My campus is pretty spread out, but for my classes, dorm, and food, I walk everywhere. I can even walk to Main Street if I want to get off campus. When my best friend from home picked me up, I was really caught off guard by how fast we were going. It took just over a minute to get to the main intersection of town which would've taken me easily 8 minutes to walk-- and I'm a fast walker! 2. Take summer clothes. In case you didn't notice, we are having a bit of an Indian summer-- at least in Western Pennsylvania! I am not a summer person. I don't like the heat. I definitely don't like the humidity. I can appreciate it, but it just isn't my favorite season. When I decided to go north a bit for college, I was excited for the weather. I am a fall and winter person-- I like my jeans and sweaters! I packed some t-shirts and shorts, nothing crazy, but my wardrobe was definitely geared towards fall. I figured, yeah, it was still the end of August, but the northern location would outweigh that tiny fact, right? Wrong. It was HOT. So future college students, take some summer clothes, just in case. 3. Appreciate the full fridge.Ah, the contentment that I felt when I went home and opened a fridge that had more than protein shakes, milk, and some leftovers in it! Having a stocked fridge is a luxury-- enjoy it! (And thank the person who is paying to stock it!) 4. Appreciate the walls! The walls? The walls. I am telling you. This, I was not expecting nor did I realize I was missing when I went to college. Having sturdy walls that you can feel around you is an indescribable feeling that apparently I'm lacking at school. It's hard to explain but I just feel... contained, safe, secure. 5. Appreciate the full bathroom door. For my traditional housing compadres, need I say more? 6. "Can I eat this?"Once I was done greeting my family, petting my dog, getting my bags inside, reveling at the fridge, walls, and doors, I turned to my kitchen counter and saw all the homemade baked goods and breads and just homey food and asked my Mom, "Can I eat this?" Eat it while you can! Even in the face of these unexpected revelations, college is awesome :)

... signed, some Instagram post that I saw a while ago! care.com One of the reasons that we were happy as little kids is that we...... didn't spend our days staring at screens.
We spend so much of each day looking at our phones, tablets, computers, TVs, kiosks and more. I am not saying that we need to cut all electronics out of our daily routines because they are invaluable and useful tools. Tools. Not substitutions, not lifelines, not extensions of ourselves. We should focus on using our devices to enhance our life, not to live it. We live life out beyond our screens; we live our lives by going out and living. What better day is there to decrease our dependency on our screens than today? |
