This is the last quote reflection from my eighth grade language arts class. It isn't so much a quote as a reflection prompt because it was the last one of the year. I hope you have enjoyed this series as much as I have enjoyed delving back into the Musings of My Eighth Grade Self! What is the most important thing your parents have taught you to this point? Your friends? Your teachers? 5/24/13
The most important thing my parents have taught me is to be true to myself (while staying inside any rules). My friends have taught me that everyone is bound to their own destiny. My friends have walked away many times over these nine years. But the true ones always come back in the end. My aquantances have also taught me that each person is VERY unique and different from the next person that comes along. My teachers have taught me a lot! They have taught me educationally but also as a person. Even though I have had bad days with every one of them, I will never forget them. I hope they know that and that I thank them very much for teaching me what I know!!

*This is one of my favorite quotes!* Do not go where the path may lead you. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. [Think about: As you prepare to leave [my old school], where do you envision yourself, a year from now, at the end of your freshman highschool year? In 4 years as you prepare for life after high school? In 10 years, when you have assumed adult responsibilities?]
Do not be a follower, be a leader. Don't just follow the paved road. Take risks and crash through the woods with boots and a flashlight. If you work for it, you will appreciate it. A year from now, I will have (probably) survived freshman year. I will know many more people, but I will remember the friends I have made here. When I am done with highschool I will contemplate what to do with my life. I will most likely go to college, and get a guinea pig! In 10 years, let's see. I will be 24. I might be married, I will hopefully have a job, maybe a family, and definitely some pets! But who knows; I will have to leave my trail when I find my sense of direction. Nothing can be either loved or hated unless it is first understood. When you meet some one new, you automatically form a judgement or first impression. da Vinci is trying to warn us against doing that. He wants us, rather, to get to know the person before we form our opinion.
Same thing for highschool and its courses. You have to endure, see if it gets better, and then judge it. You have to understand the ins and outs of something FIRST, then start judging and forming opinions. Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands. [What values/morals have been instilled in you?
How have you applied/interpreted these in making difficult choices in the past? In the future how will these affect your actions/decisions? Explain how you essentially have the final say in forming your own character?] Apr.[il] 22 [2013] The values and morals that my parents have instilled in me are numerous. Included in the list are The Golden Rule, respecting everyone, your spouse needs to love God, and be polite to your elders. When people have thoroughly annoyed me, I have applied the Golden Rule and fought hard against my instinct to bite back. If someone is being made fun of, I refuse to join because that would be disrespectful of that person. These will help me in the future to pick the right lifestyle, spouse, and even in raising any children. I have the final say in sculpting myself and how I live my life. I am only primarily guided by my parents until I move out. Then I have to make all the decisions about what I see, hear, do, how I dress, etc. These choices will, in the long run, form me as a person. A ship in port is safe, but that is not what ships are built for. 3/12/13
This is a good quote to remember while we are preparing for high school. We are the ships. The port is [my old school]. I have been here for almost a decade. Nine years is a long time. But it is now time to head out into the sea of our different high schools and find our port there. We, the human race, are stronger than we thing. For many of us, all our lives are spent in the same port. If we would put ourselves up to battling the crashing waves, we might just get further than before. However, that's only if we do what we were built for. |
