As a student attending college in the wonderful snow belt, I am just now ending my 5-week winter break. That's right-- 5 glorious weeks off from school with nothing better to do than relax, recoup, and not worry about anything school related. However, as awesome as it's been, like all good things, it's quickly coming to an end. In the spirit of preserving it a little longer and, for those of you already back to school, to give you something to hold on to, here are 11 must-do's for college students home for winter break. pixdaus.com 1. Spend time with family & friends. This might seem like a given, but it's important! While you were off making a name for yourself away at college, your family and friends were all rooting for you from back home. Your schedule might be too hectic to spend an afternoon with everyone to catch up, but even little gestures could make all the difference. 2. Work. Granted, work and winter break might not mesh so well in your opinion, but I highly recommend finding a seasonal position or returning to a job over break. Who doesn't like to have a little extra spending money to take back to school with them? 3. Go out to eat. There's a few reasons this made the list. A) Hello, you get to go out to eat. Always fun. B) Perfect way to accomplish #1. C) You've been eating campus food for the last 3+ months. Treat yo self ;) 4. Embrace a healthy lifestyle. This might be eating cleaner, exercising more, or just cutting back on things. And it could help you to establish a routine that you can continue at campus! 5. Catch up on all your favorite shows. No matter what service you use, it's time to relax, burrow under some blankets with a hot drink, and catch up on the lives of your favorite, albeit possibly fictional, people. 6. Watch the snow fall. If you are a fan of the snow, fill your afternoons with snow angels, snowmen, sledding, skiing, snowboarding, and more. If you have a driveway, lend a hand shoveling. If you prefer to enjoy your functioning heating system, take the time to pause and admire the world's winter blanket. 7. Enjoy the house. Embrace being home even if that just means re-realizing just how awesome being in a house is, as opposed to being in a dorm building. a) Your pets are available for 24/7 quality bonding time. b) Real bathrooms. Need I say more? c) Your own bed. d) All of your belongings that you had to leave behind. e) If you're a candle fan like me, being able to enjoy them again. And so much more... 8. Cook or bake. Even if you don't consider yourself to be a whiz in the kitchen. The ability to make yourself some homemade food is so underrated. 9. Cheer for the Steelers. And then cheer for whoever is up against the Patriots! (Nothing personal to any New England readers!) 10. Learn something new or hone an existing skill. No better time than the present! 11. Get ready to return to school. As hard as it is, try to spread out your packing so that you aren't cramming the night before your residency opens. Make sure you've ordered your books and fit in a shopping trip for any supplies that need replenished. Don't forget your winter clothes, especially in the North! Have a safe, enjoyable, and educational Spring semester!
After my two week winter break, I had a week of school, a week of midterms, and now a three day weekend. However, I feel that I haven't been very productive, at least as effective as I was before the break. I feel like that is the common problem for most people after a winter break. Here are a couple tips for getting back on your feet! 1. SleepMost likely during Christmas break you stayed up late(r) and therefore woke up late(r). I'm talking midnight or later til around or after noon. I understand that during a break. You go to relatives' houses, eat a lot, talk a lot, laugh a lot, staying late. You are exhausted when you finally stumble into bed. Well I'm sorry to say that is not a good start if you want to be productive post-break. Go to sleep as early as you can, hopefully around 10-11 at the latest. Set an alarm for whatever time you have to wake up for work/school or at the latest 9:30. If you are someone who sleeps through your alarm or snoozes it for an hour, you need to set a loud alarm on your phone or a portable clock and leave it out of your reach. That way you have to get out of bed to shut it off and you will feel awake, rather than slowly falling off your bed and napping on the floor and then zombie walking to the bathroom because you can't wait any longer. You'll just feel groggy. If you get up and move around you will feel much more awake. 2. BreakfastI have never understood you people who don't eat breakfast (or lunch for that matter, but that's not what we are talking about). I always have to eat breakfast or I get light headed. If you eat breakfast you won't be distracted mid morning by your grumbling stomach. For those of you who don't have time, eat on the way to work/school. It doesn't have to be big- you can have a granola bar or a banana or something. Just eat breakfast! You will feel a lot better and won't be distracted. 3. PlannerGetting assignments and deadlines and schedules etc throughout the day and telling yourself, "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember!" Ha. Unless you have a super good memory, you need a planner. You can use a day planner, a notebook, a wall calendar, a desk calendar, your phone calendar, your Google calendar, so many things. You will be organized and therefore productive! Plus you won't forget to do anything. 4. Work SpaceKeep you work space clean. Whether it's your cubicle or your desk at home, keep it neat. Also work away from any distractions, i.e. television, YouTube, texting, etc. You need to keep work separate from chilling out. And don't sit on a squishy chair. Communication is so important in my life, and hopefully yours too! I am the treasurer of my school's photography club. The other officers and myself are in the middle of starting our first fundraiser of the year and confusion in communicating almost drove it right in to the ground! We all stepped back and acknowledged the fact that we weren't communicating well and have a meeting set up for tomorrow to set everything straight. Fingers crossed that we pull of the fundraiser without a hitch! 1) A lot of people think that communicating is talking, but an even more important element to communicating is LISTENING! I know it probably sounds really cheesy, but it's true! Everyone has to be willing to listen to others' ideas with an open mind. Leave all your judgments at the door and you will get so much more out of the discussion. 2) If you say you will do something, do it. People have to be able to rely on you. Make sure you don't bite off more than you can chew, but if you do, you need to ask someone to help you finish the job. 3) Don't fall off the grid without warning. Today, we aren't always available to sit down and talk. While that is the highest priority, it just isn't always an option. This means that we resort to video chats, email chains, text messaging, or long phone calls. If your group is depending on reaching you through media, you need to be available when you say you will be. 4) I have a REALLY short temper most days. You might also. Tempers and good communication just don't mix. I know it's a huge challenge, but really make an effort to keep your eyes in your head and non-productive words in your mouth. Remember that your group is all working towards a mutual goal. |
